On my vacation, after i finished reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, (which is a phenomenal book that a I HIGHLY recommend), I started a book called Mr. Penumbra’s 24-hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. In the novel, two of the characters are talking about what the future will look like and one asked what the world will look like in a thousand years. It was the first time I had really thought about this.
A thousand years is a long time. Just look how far we’ve come in the last 100 years. Airplanes, cars, internet, cures for many diseases (Communication, Travel, Medicine, etc.) all have had mass adoption in the last 100 years. The last 100 years have been insane. Think about it for a second. Absolutely insane.
So where do we go in the next 100 years? What about the next 50 years? 20 years? 10 years? Do we take a leap at some point? This all makes me think about technology and how one can take advantage of upcoming trends to build lasting products and businesses.
For example- How will travel change? Will someone invent/discover teleportation? If so, what would that mean for other methods of travel? There are tons of ancillary businesses that would explode overnight (ie teleportation docking, etc). There would be a huge opportunity around building a low cost teleportation contraption for mass adoption.
Obviously I am getting ahead of myself, but it is important to train your mind to see the future. I want to be able to spot trends before others do. I want to understand what will be (or what might be) so I can be a part of helping to shepherd it.
