Alex's Tech Thoughts

A few weeks ago a friend sent me a few screenshots of his friend’s FB post. His friend was featured on a live Snapchat and the post was quite amazing. But before getting into what it said, I think an explanation is in order.
For those that don’t actively use Snapchat or have never heard of “a live snapchat”, it is when Snapchat (the company) compiles a bunch of public Snapchat stories (when you add individual snaps together to create a narrative) to highlight an “event.” This event could be the Super Bowl, the All Star Game, the Victoria Secret Show, or something else.
So back to the story. This friend of a friend was featured in the Snowpocalypse Live Snapchat in January. Besides just being cool, something that the person noticed was that he had the data of how many people actually saw his snap as part of the live Snapchat. The numbers: 24.79 million people saw his snap! 5,000 screenshot his moment in the live snapchat. Insane numbers. But in the context of Snapchat being next-generation content (i.e. replacing TV or clips) it is mind-blowing.

Caption: 24.79M!!! Holy moly!
While only 2-4 minutes in length, the Snowpocalypse Live Snapchat has a few million more viewers than a show like The Walking Dead (15.6 million but expected to climb to 20M with DVR-delayed added in).
It is crazy that a Snapchat live story would wipe the floor of any TV-content out there right now.
It is alo no surprise that Snapchat launched Discover. It makes sense. Most people see Snapchat’s valuation rising and think we live in frothy times. And we might. BUT Snapchat is turning into a content gorilla right in front of everyone’s eyes and most people don’t even know it.
